The creation of the Danville Area Community Foundation was officially celebrated on
December 12, 1999 at the Pine Barn Inn in Danville.
Dr. George W. Leighow, initial chairman of the Danville Area
Community Foundation Board of Directors, commented that:
"As a member of the former Commonwealth Bank Board of
Directors in Williamsport, I had a chance to observe how
the Williamsport-Lycoming Foundation was run. I talked
to Henry Hood, who was chief executive officer at
Geisinger at the time, and to other community leaders in
Danville and we all agreed that a foundation would be a
great thing for our community."
It made sense to Leighow and others to affiliate with an
established community foundation, one that could help
with administrative and management tasks while the new
foundation board concentrated on fundraising.
Since its inception, the Danville Area Community
Foundation's assets have grown to nearly $2.3 million
within 34 separate funds. Additionally, more than $2
million in planned gifts has been committed to the
Foundation.
The Danville Area Community Foundation has provided
nearly $300,000 in grant funding to charitable
organizations in Montour County since 1999.
